Whether you are looking for beautiful mountain views, history or adventure you can find it in Charlestown! I was amazed by all there was to see and do there. I started at The Fort at No. 4. It is hard for me to imagine what daily life was like in 1740 but this living history museum paints the picture very well.
Haven’t you always wanted a cannon in your bedroom?
There was a map available in the gift shop showing the location of many of the historic homes and buildings in town. I opted to just drive around and see what I could see. Main Street offered some beautiful old buildings, including the library and a church. Many of the old homes are still private residences but some have been converted to businesses…
Charlestown borders Vermont and is separated by the Connecticut River. The fertile soil in the area was as important for farming in 1740 as it is today. There are still many beautiful farms to be seen…
And some of the farms have amazing views…
I stopped on the side of the road when I saw this group of horses in the field. Usually when I stop to photograph horses, they pay me no mind and continue to graze. These 4 were as friendly as could be! They came straight to the fence, as if to welcome me to Charlestown…
My next stop was at the Morningside Flight Park. I sat and watched the hang gliders and paragliders for quite a while. It was obvious, some people were taking lessons and some people were just riding the winds…
As I continued with my tour, I thought a bird’s eye view must be incredible since the ground level views were so stunning…
As I was driving along, loud guinea hen calls caught my attention…
And on a different road, the sound of rushing water meant I had to go investigate…
Elsewhere, blooms, past and present, caught my eye…
As I left Charlestown, I thought about all of the wonderful things I had seen. There really is something for everyone. Thanks for coming along!

Charlestown is worth the visit. I loved the time I spent with the horses. They each had such a unique personality!
For some reason I’ve never explored Charlestown but I have been to where they hang glide.
I’m surprised that you didn’t see any cardinal flowers along that stream. It looks like the perfect spot for them. Some friend of mine just found the ones that you saw in Fitzwilliam last year.

I enjoyed watching them hang glide, at one time, I probably would have tried it myself. I hope your friend can give you better directions to the cardinal flowers than I did.

I don’t know if the building was always the library, but it is a beautiful building. I think I may have to start bringing carrots with me for such friendly horses. I had a blast with them. I can’t imagine the sound of a cannon going off in doors!
The library is stunning and I love the spotty horse. I’d like to walk around that fort too.
