As I entered Canaan, I was greeted by another of those wonderful “Welcome” signs. The “village” is comprised of restored homes, inns and churches, plus a lovely public beach on the shores of Canaan Street Lake. As I drove along, marveling at the historic buildings, I kept an eye of the sky. Clouds had begun to roll in and there was an ever present chance of a shower. No one was picnicking and the lake had a sense of peacefulness to it…
I walked over to the Canaan Historical Society building to see what the hours were. Unfortunately, they are only open on Saturdays from 1pm-4pm, July through October. Since I couldn’t go in, I wondered around the grounds. There was another snow roller like the one I’d seen in Alexandria. This time, I knew what it was

As I turned around the sun broke through the clouds, illuminating the side of the church while the storm clouds formed a dramatic background.
Not wanting to be caught in a downpour, I returned to the car. As I drove along Canaan Street, I thought about the people who lived in these glorious homes back in the 1800’s What would they think of them now?

On the opposite side of the road, the breaks in the clouds highlighted the distant mountains and the dandelions…
As I turned down Back Bay Rd, Cardigan Mountain School loomed stately on the hilltop…
The mountain for which the school is named can be seen from many places in Canaan…
Moving away from the village, farmhouses and fields began to dot the landscape…

A great place to visit while you are in Canaan is Clark Pond. With very few lake houses on the shore, the calm waters are only disturbed by the loons searching for a meal…

Even the painted turtle seemed content near the shore…
The other “wildlife” I saw was a reminder that motorcycle week plays a big part in the Lake’s Region economy…
Lacking wildlife is the Canaan Fair Speedway which closed in 2013…
I doubt this car would have gone to the speedway anyhow…
I had been told when I got to Canaan, I HAD to stop at Pappa Z’s for a meal. I was told about state fair portions of french fries and hamburgers from freshly ground beef made right before your eyes. All of this and a drink for $5.99? Steve and I just had to check it out. Every word was true! Mmmmm (and yes, it really was only $5.99!)…

The bulging columns on the historical society building are unusual. What beautiful old farmhouses they have there. I love that one with the L shaped porch.

Those storm clouds looked ominous but they make a great backdrop. I’m off to New York for a few days in October and everyone keeps warning me about portion sizes of food there. I see I’m going to have to ask for kids meals wherever I go!
